DMT, DATS coordinating HSTP Meeting

The public is invited to join DMT's director and the director of Danville Area Transportation Study (DATS) on Wednesday, December 9th for a discussion concerning the Human Services Transportation Plan (HSTP). The plan is a coordinated plan that considers transportation needs in the area, especially the needs of people with disabilities, older adults, and people with lower income levels. The HSTP is being developed with input from transit providers, government officials, human service agencies, advocacy groups, and other members of the public. The meeting will be held from 4:30PM to 6:00PM at Danville Public Library. It will be an "open house" format, so the public is invited to stop by to review the plan and discuss needs anytime during those hours.

Give, and Ride Free

Today through December 31 is the "DMT Season of Giving," a special time of the year when Danville Mass Transit is promoting the spirit of giving. If you're a DMT rider, this is your chance to share your holiday spirit by giving to a great cause.

Here's how it works:
  1. Use your blue DMT bag to collect non-perishable food items such as canned vegetables, peanut butter, spaghetti, canned meats, soups, etc. If you need a blue DMT bag, you can pick one up from our office at 101 N. Jackson St., in Danville (while supplies last).
  2. Use the bag to take your donation to the Salvation Army Emergency Food Pantry at 855 E. Fairchild, Monday to Friday 9AM to Noon or 1 to 4PM. The shelter is served by DMT routes 4 Bowman, 5 Fairchild, and 6 Main/Fairchild. Regular fare will be required for these trips.
  3. When you donate, the Salvation Army will give you a free DMT 5-Ride Ticket, courtesy of DMT.
Happy holidays from all of us at DMT! We hope you will take part in our Season of Giving. For more information call 217-431-0653 or click www.rideDMT.org.

DMT to demonstrate bike rack on bus

Bike riders may one day be able to take their bikes with them on Danville buses. Danville Mass Transit (DMT) will demonstrate a sample bike rack to the city council’s Public Works Committee on Tuesday, October 9.

The bike rack, which has room for three bikes, was installed last month on a DMT bus. Public Transportation Director John Metzinger said the sample rack was provided by the manufacturer to DMT for testing and demonstration. He said employees are becoming familiar with how to use the rack.
Metzinger wants to install bike racks on the entire fleet to help extend the reach of public transportation and to enhance use of bicycling in the community. He said that he is not aware of any riders using the bike rack, but is not surprised since only one is installed. Several riders have inquired about bike racks and are wondering when they will be available on all buses, he said.
“Installation on the entire fleet is necessary to enhance use,” Metzinger said. “If they are installed only intermittently on the fleet, riders will not be able to count on being able to take their bike with them.” Metzinger said bikes are not allowed inside of buses for safety reasons.
Metzinger estimates costs to buy bike racks for all the buses at $12,000. He said DMT employees would handle the installation in house.
